I am thinking about setting up a small business where I will need to have my own website. However, I know very little about setting up a website, buying a domain name and keeping the site running. I need some help with how I go about this and set up costs etc?

At lot of the public use ‘GoDaddy’ = however whilst this is the ‘cheap end’ of the range for individuals hosting their own ‘blogs’ etc. it can quickly get very expensive for serious Business users .. although they often have ‘special offers’ ..
First there is the DOMAIN NAME .. for this you pay an annual registration charge (some places will charge you an initial fee and then annual registration) = it’s only a few $$ / £ and you can usually pay multiple years in advance (one way to distinguish the scammers and con-merchnats from the serious business is to check how many years they have been in existence and how long they have paid for .. the Chinese ‘phishing’ merchants and scam artists often register 6 months at a time)
Next is your WEB SITE HOSTING .. this is almost always a MONTHLY fee … you do not have to HOST at the same place you Register BUT some registration companies will make it very difficult for your to move your hosting (or will charge you a transfer fee) …
Be especially careful of the con-merchant registration companies that register the Domain in THEIR name rather than in YOUR name (if they do this, you own nothing .. as you will find out when you try to move the Domain) = there are still a few of theses about ..
When it comes to Hosting you want to know what bandwidth your site will get and, perhaps most vital, what security measures the hosting company has in place (it dosn’t matter too much if Joe’s Blog is ‘hacked’ a bit .. whist Joe’s Stores (prices) is another matter))
I suggest you check the Forums for any hosting company you are thinking of signing up to ..
If you are a serious Business users you will have to pay some-one to develop your site for you – they will start from a ‘template’ or some pre-packaged ‘ready made web store’ software kit (but check the forums especially for SECURITY before using one ..) .. be especially weary of anyone that volunteers to build you a web site ‘from scratch’ .. there are just too many different ways to ‘hack’ a web site …
you can get like a sub-domaint name for free sometimes, like microsoft has this thing wear you can have you site for free but the name has like .wa in it if your in washington, and other things so it doesnt look so official. you could buy your own one their usually like 15 dollers i think, than its not to much to keep it running.
Using Google it’s $10 per year. It’s very easy to set everything up. I’ve used them several times, and I had known nothing.
It’s about $15 set up and $15 / month.

I am at the Data Centre Design Association (see http://www.datacentredesign.co) I read several of your entries with interest and added you to my RSS reader. I am in the process of setting up a blog on our own site using WordPress and a wiki using Wikimedia and a section using Drupal so I am looking for web hosts that would be able to host them with the least difficulties.
